Since moving away from Intel to develop its in-house PC chips laid on the foundation of its mobile A-series chips, Apple's M series desktop chips have changed the dynamics of the PC industry. The M1 not only proved to be successful but also powerful and efficient at the same time, earning early adopter's trust for reliability to move to a new ARM-based desktop architecture. With Apple's Rosetta at play, early adopters could bet on moving away from Intel chips to try their beloved apps and software suits within the new ARM system.

M3 chips: Apple’s billion-dollar gamble

After successfully debuting the M2 series of chips, Apple has just launched a new series of chips for computers, called the M3, that are more powerful and efficient than ever before in its Scary Fast event. These chips are made using cutting-edge technology that makes them very small and packed with billions of transistors. According to an analyst, Apple spent a whopping $1 billion to design and test these chips, which shows how ambitious and costly this project was.

The M3 chips come in three versions: the M3, the M3 Pro, and the M3 Max. They are designed for different Macs, from the lightweight Macbook Air and iPads to advanced MacBook Pros, Mac Pros, and Studio. They can handle various tasks, such as web browsing, coding, running simulations, and editing videos.

The base-level M3 chip has eight cores and a new 10-core graphics unit. It is as complex as another famous chip, the Phoenix, made by AMD. The M3 Pro and the M3 Max are even more advanced, with more cores and graphics units. This time, the M3 Max-based MacBook Pro can be opted with as much as 128GB of unified memory. The M3 Max is the most complex chip ever made, with 92 billion transistors inside. That's more than the number of stars in the Milky Way galaxy!

Adopting the 3nm process

Apple made these chips using a new process called the N3, aka the 3nm process, which makes them very small and efficient. This process was risky because it was not tested before, but it paid off. Apple can make more chips from a single piece of silicon, which saves money and resources. The M3 chips are smaller than the AMD's Phoenix chips, which means they are easier and cheaper to make.

Apple is known for investing much in research and development, especially in making its chips. Last year, it spent over $26 billion on R&D, which is more than the GDP of some countries. This shows that Apple is one of the few companies that can afford to make such complex and innovative chips.

Making chips like the M3 takes work. It takes a lot of time and money and a lot of expertise and creativity. Apple makes most of its technology instead of using other companies' technology. The M3 chips have many new features, such as a new graphics system that can handle realistic 3D tasks with support for ray tracing, a new AI unit that can learn and improve, and a new multimedia engine and encoder that can process multimedia production faster than ever.
