In a strategic move aimed at boosting sales, Samsung, the world's leading smartphone manufacturer, is placing a significant emphasis on artificial intelligence (AI) for its upcoming flagship device to drive increased sales.

2024 will see Samsung lead the mobile AI wave with the new Galaxy S24

Potentially named the Galaxy S24, the mobile phone is scheduled for a launch on January 17 in San Jose, California, through a livestream.

A new era of mobile AI

The teaser for the launch cryptically hints at the arrival of "Galaxy AI.” The focus on AI marks a departure from the industry's reliance on camera technology and flexible displays in previous years, reported the South China Morning Post.

“A revolutionary mobile experience is coming,” said Samsung in a press release. “Get ready to discover a new era full of possibilities with the latest Galaxy innovations, designed to transform how you live, connect and create. The new Galaxy S series will set a higher standard for the most intelligent mobile experience yet.”

As 2024 unfolds, AI capabilities are expected to take center stage in the smartphone as well as the personal computer market. Interesting Engineeringreported this week that Microsoft will be soon revealing its Surface lineup of laptops with innovative AI capabilities.

Samsung and Qualcomm to lead mobile AI

Counterpoint Research estimates over a billion smartphones with built-in generative AI will be shipped by the end of 2027 and over 100 million units in 2024 alone. 

Their report defines GenAI smartphones as “a subset of AI smartphones that uses Generative AI to create original content, rather than just providing pre-programmed responses or performing predefined tasks.” 

These upcoming devices are set to operate with native support for size-optimized AI models, accompanied by specific hardware specifications. In the immediate future of the GenAI landscape, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) are charting their courses in four key areas – information provision, image creation, live translation, and personal assistant applications.

OpenAI's ChatGPT and Dall-E tools are contributing to the generative AI wave, playing a key role in NVIDIA’s success, which has climbed the charts as the key manufacturer of AI products in the market today, further said the SCMPreport.

The next frontier involves integrating this technology into devices.

The Counterpoint researchers predict Samsung and Qualcomm to lead in this domain. The report also places Qualcomm as the likely player to capture over 80% of the GenAI smartphone market for the next two years. MediaTek is poised to make significant strides with its upcoming devices featuring the Dimensity 9300 chipset.
