Who can forget Elon Musk’s Cybertruck unveiling event in November 2019? The billionaire entrepreneur had made famous claims that the vehicle’s windows were composed of a proprietary Tesla Armor Glass that was supposed to be very tough and shatterproof.

An unfortunate rather embarrassing event

However, during the 2019 presentation, a metal ball was hurled at the side windows of the car to demonstrate its strength, and the windows ultimately cracked. Elon Musk explained away this unfortunate event by stating that an earlier collision on the door had weakened the glass, resulting in this unanticipated outcome. 

Despite this incident, he continued to claim that the windows were indeed shatterproof, designed explicitly to exhibit strength and longevity. Now, according to an article published by Business Insidertoday, the features will also be bulletproof when the vehicle finally rolls out to consumers. Could this be true?

If it is, it won’t be for all Cybertrucks. Musk further stated in the article that Tesla will provide the option to purchase a "beast mode" Cybertruck that will be the version equipped with bulletproof windows. These key features, however, will not be able to be rolled down so consumers may think twice about that specific option.

It should be noted that no glass is completely resistant to all types of firearms or projectiles. Bulletproof glass's efficiency is determined by its exact design, thickness, and the type of ammunition it is engineered to withstand. If bullet resistance is a necessary quality in a vehicle, it would be wiser for users to pick materials and designs that have been expressly certified for ballistic protection such as those that come in a tank.

Bulletproof to a nine millimeter handgun

One thing that is more likely is that the body of the truck could be bulletproof. It’s notably composed of ultra-hard cold-rolled stainless steel that Musk said in 2019 made the vehicle "literally bulletproof" to one common weapon: the nine millimeter handgun.

In October of 2023, Tesla Owners Sillicon Valley posted a bullet-riddled image of a Cybertruck with a caption that read: “Cybertruck can handle Tommy Gun bullets.” The post at the time garnered much attention not all of it good. Many claimed the image was not the result of a real shooting and was rather a PR stunt.

However, it seems Musk may have more on his mind than bulletproof glass as he has set a delivery date for the vehicle of November 30 2023. This is a long time away from the initial 2019 plans and shows that the CEO has not been able to deliver on his previous claims.

So two questions are on our minds: will we see the electric trucks delivered shortly and will they come with bulletproof glass? Only time can predict the answers.
