Ukraine plans to build four new nuclear reactors this year. Work on the new reactors will commence in the Summer or Autumn, Reuters reports. According to Ukraine's Energy Minister, German Galushchenko, the reactors are needed to enable the war-ravaged nation to compensate for lost energy capacity due to the war with Russia.
Much needed power
Ukraine plans to import two units of reactors and related equipment, one from Russia via Bulgaria and the other from Westinghouse, a power equipment maker from the West. All four reactors will be constructed at Khmelnytskyi nuclear power plant located in western Ukraine, according to Galushchenko.
The plan, Reuters explains, is far more ambitious than previously outlined, but Ukrainian officials have not explicitly stated if the new reactors can be developed simultaneously. "I think (we'll start construction) in summer-autumn," Galushchenko said in an interview. "We need vessels," he added, referring to the reactor pressure vessels that will have to be imported. We want to do the third and fourth units right away.

The construction of the 3rd and 4th reactors at Khmelnytskyi started in the 1980s but was halted. Since Ukraine gained independence from the Soviet Union in 1991, it has built three new nuclear reactors - one each at Zaporizhzhia, Khmelnytskyi, and Rivne nuclear power plants.
Three nuclear power plants in Ukraine generate more than 55 percent of the country's electricity. Still, Kiev aims to expand the sector to offset the loss of Zaporizhzhia, Europe's largest nuclear plant. However, Russia took control of the facility by invading Ukraine in 2022. The facility's six nuclear reactors are now offline.
Zaporizhzhia is the same nuclear facility that hit the news back in March 2022 about being attacked by Russian forces. Thankfully, only one part of the facility was hit. A rogue Russian shell hit the first production unit of Ukraine's Energoatom nuclear power plant, according to the company's head, Petro Kotin.
Fortunately, emergency services could put out the fire, and there were no casualties. Reports soon materialized that the reactors were not damaged and no radiation was released. However, Russian forces managed to take control of the Zaporizhzhia plant; it was later recaptured by Ukraine in June of 2023.
"With the 3rd and 4th (Khmelnytkyi units) we want to compensate for Zaporizhzhia, and now we are in the talks with our Bulgarian partners on the two reactors we want to take," Galushchenko said. "If we received the reactor vessels today, I think it would be 2.5 years and we would have a third reactor on line," Galushchenko said.
A mix of Russian and Western reactors
In addition to constructing Soviet-era VVER-1000 units, Ukraine plans to begin preliminary construction to host two modern Western AP-1000 units at Khmelnytskyi, Reuters explains in an exclusive report.
"We need to pass (parliamentary) legislation and we have draft laws on the 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th units. This is VVER-1000s, while the 5th and 6th we want to build the AP-type. This is a parallel process," he said. In December, Energoatom and Westinghouse agreed to buy equipment for Khmelnytskyi's 5th power unit.
