Maxar Technologies' new satellite bus designed for low Earth orbit constellations passed a critical design review, a press statement from the company on July 24 revealed.
The satellite firm will build 16 of the Maxar 300 series buses for L3Harris Technologies. They will be used to build missile-detecting sensor satellites for the Space Development Agency's (SDA) Tranche 1 Tracking Layer program.

Each of the relatively small satellite buses is roughly the size of a conventional oven, helping to reduce costs and power compared to other conventional models.
"Those dimensions help the SDA achieve its goals to significantly reduce size, weight, power and cost compared to traditional missile detection satellites," Maxar explained in its press statement. "The SDA mission will also adapt and extend Maxar’s deep commercial communications satellite experience for new uses."

"The T1TRK program is designed to provide global warning and tracking of conventional and advanced missile threats, including hypersonic missile systems," the statement continued.
The Tracking Layer Tranche 1 is an in-development global communications network in low-Earth orbit for the U.S. Department of Defense.
In July, the SDA awarded L3Harris a $700 million contract to produce 14 satellites for the Tracking Layer Tranche 1 and an additional two more for a missile-tracking demonstration. The SDA plans to start launching the Tracking Layer Tranche 1 in 2025.
Maxar is on schedule to begin production this year
The Maxar 300 bus was designed to launch eight satellites on a heavy-lift rocket. During the design review, Maxar Technologies examined the bus's structural design, power, attitude control, and command and data handling to the test.
"We designed the Maxar 300 series platform to be quickly scalable," Chris Johnson, Senior Vice President and General Manager for Space at Maxar, said in the press statement. "The team completed CDR just ten months from award, and we're on schedule to begin production of our platforms later this year with initial deliveries in early 2024."
"Our customers need speed and agility while ensuring a superior technical product, and that's what Maxar's commercial experience can deliver," Johnson added.
Maxar is known for providing satellite imagery of unfolding events such as the wildfires on the Greek island of Rhodes and the Ukraine war. The company builds its satellites at its factory in Palo Alto, California. The new satellite buses will be shipped from there to L3Harris’ assembly facility in Palm Bay, Florida.
