BMW Manufacturing has announced a new partnership with Figure, a robotics startup that specializes in humanoid robots. The partnership will see Figure's robots being deployed in BMW's facility in Spartanburg, South Carolina, the largest automotive exporter in the US.
This is the first commercial deal that Figure has signed since it was founded in 2022. The company did not reveal how many robots BMW will be using but said that the partnership will begin with small quantities and scale up if the robots meet the performance expectations.

Figure's robots are designed to be safe and adaptable and can perform various tasks in the manufacturing processes, such as working in the body shop, handling sheet metal, and managing the warehouse. The robots will undergo training to learn the specific skills required for each task and will be integrated into the facility in the next 12-24 months.

A growing trend
BMW is not the only car maker that is exploring the use of humanoid robots in its production. Other companies, such as Honda and Hyundai, have also been experimenting with human-like robots for years, to automate some of the repetitive and hazardous work in the assembly lines.
Tesla, one of the leading innovators in the automotive industry, has also been developing its own humanoid robot, called Optimus. The latest version, Optimus Gen 2, was unveiled in December 2023, and Tesla's CEO Elon Musk has predicted that there will be a billion humanoid robots on Earth by the 2040s.
Future vision
Humanoid robots are attracting more attention from investors and researchers, as they have the potential to be more versatile and flexible than conventional robots that are designed for specific tasks. With artificial intelligence-powered software, humanoid robots can move in a wide range of motion and learn to perform new tasks as humans do.
However, it is still unclear if humanoid robots can be viable and reliable in a real-life environment, and what challenges and risks they may pose to human workers and society. Figure's CEO Brett Adcock said that working with BMW on automation in a manufacturing facility is a huge validator for his company and its vision.
