SpaceX founder and CEO Elon Musk said on Saturday that his satellite internet project Starlink will provide connectivity to internationally recognized aid organizations in Gaza, where Israeli airstrikes have disrupted phone and internet services.
Musk’s announcement came in response to a post by US Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who criticized the communication blackout in the Gaza Strip as “unacceptable” and “dangerous” for journalists, medical professionals, humanitarian efforts, and civilians.
“I do not know how such an act can be defended. The United States has historically denounced this practice,” Ocasio-Cortez wrote on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter.

Starlink is a constellation of thousands of satellites orbiting the Earth that aim to provide low-cost and high-speed internet access to remote areas. SpaceX has launched more than 5,000 Starlink satellites so far and plans to deploy up to 42,000 in the future.
According to the Palestinian Red Crescent Society, the communication disruption in Gaza affects the central emergency number 101 and hampers the arrival of ambulances to the wounded in the ongoing strikes. The organization said it had lost contact with its operations room and teams in Gaza and expressed concern about its staff’s safety and ability to provide care.
The communication shutdown was also confirmed by Jawwal, the Palestinian telecoms provider, which said that the heavy bombardment destroyed all remaining international routes connecting Gaza to the outside world. Global internet monitor NetBlocks reported a collapse in connectivity in Gaza with a high impact on Paltel, Jawwal’s owner.
This is not the first time that Starlink has been offered as a solution to communication problems in conflict zones. In February 2022, Starlink was deployed in Ukraine shortly after Russia advanced its forces in the country. The network helped Ukrainian soldiers to communicate and coordinate in areas where other means of communication were down. However, Musk later revealed that he denied Starlink access to Ukraine when it tried to use it to launch a missile attack on Russia’s Black Sea navy fleet.
Musk’s offer of Starlink internet to Gaza aid groups has been met with mixed reactions on social media. Some praised him for his humanitarian gesture, while others questioned his motives and ethics. Some also wondered if Starlink would be able to operate in Gaza without interference from Israel or other parties.
Note: This is a breaking story and will be updated.
