Apple's latest gadget, the Apple Vision Pro, is a mixed-reality headset that promises to immerse users in a new dimension of spatial computing. But what makes this device so special, and how does it work?

Apple Vision Pro teardown reveals the engineering marvel inside

To find out, the folks at iFixit did what they do best: they took it apart. In their usual fashion, they documented the process in a video and an article, giving us a glimpse of the inner workings of Apple's most advanced hardware ever.

The teardown was challenging, as the Apple Vision Pro is complex and delicate. It took a lot of heat, tools, and patience to pry open the front glass, which revealed a maze of wires, sensors, and displays.

The Vision Pro's EyeSight seems like a repair Achilles’ heel—so many points of failure for a slightly creepy feature. In part one of our teardown, we took a look at how its three-layer display creates that uncanny 3D-ish video of the wearer’s eyes. https://t.co/RqWadVbN9U pic.twitter.com/uYONTB6WMF

The speaker stem provided spatial audio and was surprisingly easy to remove with a SIM card ejector tool. However, they were also fragile and prone to breaking. On the other hand, the battery cable was securely attached with a proprietary connector but ended with a non-standard oversized Lightning plug that iFixit called "unforgivable."

The most intriguing part of the teardown was the EyeSight display, which is the heart of the mixed-reality experience. Unlike a typical display that shows one image, the EyeSight display shows multiple videos, each with a different perspective. The display creates a stereoscopic 3D effect that changes depending on the viewer's angle by using widening and lenticular layers on top of OLED panels.

This clever technique solves the problem of low resolution and dimness that some reviewers complained about. It also enables the automatic interpupillary distance adjustment system, which adapts the display to the user's eyes.

The teardown also revealed the impressive array of sensors that the Apple Vision Pro uses to track the user's head, eyes, hand movements, and environment. These include cameras, infrared emitters, accelerometers, gyroscopes, and more.

The iFixit team praised the Apple Vision Pro as "insanely ambitious" and "an engineering marvel" but also pointed out some flaws, such as the weight, the tethered battery, and the lack of repairability. They have not given a final score yet, but they hinted it would be low. However, they appreciated some connections and components and were delighted to use the SIM card ejector tool on the speaker stems.

The Apple Vision Pro teardown is a fascinating look at the technology behind the mixed-reality magic. It shows how Apple pushed the boundaries of hardware design and innovation and sacrificed some aspects of user-friendliness and sustainability. Whether you are a fan or a critic of the device, you can't deny that it is a remarkable piece of engineering.
