California-based Sila Nanotechnologies is set to supply Panasonic with an innovative battery material – silicon anode powder – designed to enhance the performance of electric vehicles.
Sila's Titan Silicon is a "new class of high-performance" nano-composite silicon anode tailored for lithium-ion batteries.
Panasonic is a major global player in EV battery production and one of Tesla's primary suppliers.
The company is anticipated to benefit immensely from Sila's Titan Silicon.
Panasonic seeks to provide high energy-density batteries, allowing automakers to achieve exceptional performance in electric vehicles.
"Panasonic is the world's leading battery technology company, aggressively pushing the boundaries for performance, and we look forward to optimizing Titan Silicon to help achieve these momentous goals," said Gene Berdichevsky, co-founder and CEO of Sila.

"This partnership represents a significant milestone for Sila, our customers, and the industry at large, and will be key to accelerating consumer EV adoption," added Berdichevsky in the press release.
More range, less charge
According to the official statement, the Titan Silicon anode powder is made up of nano-structured silicon particles on the micrometer scale.
The advanced material serves as a substitute for graphite, typically used in traditional lithium-ion batteries. It is anticipated that silicon powder will be able to store around ten times more energy than graphite.
Notably, this shift can allow for uninterrupted 500-mile (~804-kilometer) travel and reduce recharge times to only 10 minutes.
This transition offers a solution to the key issues of using electric vehicles.
"By integrating Sila's groundbreaking battery material with our advanced cell manufacturing capabilities, we believe that we can address the concerns such as range anxiety and charging time and contribute to accelerating the adoption of EVs," said Shoichiro Watanabe, Executive Vice President of Panasonic Energy.
Panasonic intends to increase worldwide automobile battery production capacity to 200 GWh (Gigawatts per hour) by fiscal year 2030/2031.
Sila's anode materials will be manufactured in the company's Moses Lake, Washington facility.
Silicon powder will reduce reliance on supplies from China
Titan Silicon has been designed for mass scale and high battery performance.
Sila highlights it as the "first market-proven" replacement for graphite anodes.
It currently delivers a 20 percent increase in range, and further research has the potential to double these improvements.
What's more, the availability of U.S.-made silicon powder will also reduce reliance on Chinese battery materials.
As Sila and Panasonic continue to reshape the EV technological landscape, their combined efforts offer a future in which electric vehicles redefine ease, efficiency, and sustainability.
