Nadia, a humanoid robot jointly created by IMHC Robotics and Broadwalk Robotics, has generated amazement and curiosity among spectators due to its fairly remarkable prowess in the boxing ring.
In a recent company video, the carbon fiber-clad robot showcases its formidable punching skills, reminiscent of a training session. The robot delivers powerful punches to training pads worn by a human test subject, accompanied by a soundtrack from the popular video game franchise Mortal Kombat.
In this exercise, a separate engineer, situated nearby and equipped with a set of virtual reality (VR) goggles, is orchestrating the robot's actions. The engineer directly translates their movements using VR controllers, seamlessly commanding Nadia's arms and legs through a connected tether.

Advanced proposition
Nadia, a cutting-edge humanoid robot, is engineered with a focus on achieving a remarkable power-to-weight ratio and extensive range of motion. This is made possible by leveraging innovative mechanisms and advanced composite materials.
The robot draws its namesake from the renowned gymnast Nadia Comăneci, reflecting the ambitious aim of replicating human range of motion. Funding for Nadia's development is derived from various sources, encompassing support from the Office of Naval Research (ONR), Army Research Laboratory (ARL), NASA Johnson Space Center, and TARDEC. This diverse funding base underscores the broad interest and recognition of Nadia's potential applications across military, space exploration, and technological research domains, according to IHMC.
Nadia harnesses a hybrid power system comprising both electric and hydraulic actuators. The utilization of Moog's Integrated Smart Actuators (ISAs) is a key component of its design, a technology initially co-created in partnership with the Instituto Italiano de Technologia (IIT)'s Dynamic Legged Systems Lab for the HyQ quadruped. Custom electric motors are integrated into the pelvis, while off-the-shelf commercial motors are employed for the arms, ensuring a tailored and efficient robotic power setup, according to IHMC.
Engineered for exceptional flexibility, the firm claims that Nadia boasts an extensive range of motion across its 29 joints, surpassing the capabilities of many humanoid robots currently available. This remarkable flexibility equips Nadia with the capacity to access locations that are typically inaccessible to conventional robots, providing an unprecedented level of mobility.
Varied applications
Beyond its physical capabilities, Nadia is actively employed in the development of autonomous and semi-autonomous behaviors, enabling the robot to navigate and operate effectively in complex urban environments and structures.
The goal of the Nadia project is to create exceptionally agile ground robots capable of operating in indoor settings where obstacles like stairs, ladders, and debris demand a range of motion equivalent to that of a human. This versatile functionality holds significant potential across various applications, with particular relevance in areas such as firefighting, disaster response, and hazardous scenarios like Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD).
In the preceding month, IHMC Robotics unveiled a distinct video showcasing Nadia's adept traversal of challenging terrain, effortlessly surmounting hurdles constructed from concrete bricks.
With the appropriate set of capabilities, Nadia aims to serve as a valuable human teammate, expanding the reach of human presence without exposing individuals to potential harm, claims IHMC.
