Lockheed Martin, in collaboration with Northrop Grumman for the US Navy’s E-2D Advanced Hawkeye program, has recently delivered the 75th APY-9 radar. This radar is hailed as significant for the Navy, providing crucial high-quality information for national security.

The E-2D Hawkeye is widely recognized globally for its role in Airborne Early Warning (AEW) missions, with the APY-9 radar playing a key part. Manufactured by Northrop Grumman, the E-2 is commonly referred to as the "eyes of the fleet" by the US Navy, offering surveillance across air, land, and sea simultaneously.

According to Lockheed Martin, the APY-9 radar is integral in safeguarding the Navy's assets whenever their aircraft are airborne, further emphasizing its importance in maritime security operations.

Crucial system 

In the Advanced Hawkeye program for the Navy's Surveillance and Theatre Air and Missile Defense (TAMD) missions, the AN/APY-9 radar plays a crucial role. Specifically designed for the Navy's E-2D aircraft, this radar system provides essential airborne command and control capabilities and expanded surveillance capabilities.

The APY-9 radar is engineered to operate in all weather conditions and is an airborne early warning radar. Its primary function is to detect small and highly maneuverable targets, especially in challenging environments like dense littoral areas and overland terrains.

In the latest development for the APY-9 radar, warfighters now benefit from its full 360 degrees surveillance capability, combining mechanical and electronic scanning modes.

This advancement offers comprehensive situational awareness, allowing for flexible resource allocation, particularly for challenging targets or specific sectors in any direction.

The Space-Time Adaptive Processing (STAP) feature is key to its effectiveness, enabling simultaneous detection of air and sea surface targets while suppressing clutter, jamming, and electromagnetic interference, according to Lockheed Martin. 

Further enhancing its capabilities, the APY-9 employs a solid-state transmitter operating at UHF frequency, optimal for long-range detection of difficult targets. Integrating high-power solid-state transmitter electronics bolsters reliability and sensitivity, while advanced processing facilitates flexible beam management and improved target processing.

Trusted partnership 

The US Navy has secured funding for 80 out of 86 aircraft in its current program. Japan has acquired 18 E-2D Hawkeyes, while France has purchased three. Due to domestic and international demand, the APY-9 radar is anticipated to remain in production until the late 2020s, with plans for modernization and maintenance extending until the 2040s.

For over twenty years, Lockheed Martin has collaborated with Northrop Grumman on the E-2D platform. This platform is crucial for delivering vital data to joint forces and first responders, enhancing decision-making capabilities.

According to the companies, these advancements aim to shorten the gap between initial awareness and active engagement, bolstering military effectiveness. 

The E-2D efficiently processes combines, and shares information from various domains, contributing to a comprehensive command-and-control network. As an offensive and defensive coordinator for Carrier Strike Groups, it ensures seamless interoperability and surveillance, safeguarding fleet operations.

Additionally, the E-2 platform offers essential support functions such as search and rescue coordination, navigation aid, and communication relay services.

These capabilities enhance operational efficiency and effectiveness across diverse missions and environments, according to Northrop Grumman.
