Over two weeks after New York's first-ever offshore wind turbine was installed at the South Fork Wind farm, it began operations today to supply clean energy to residents of Long Island.

South Fork Wind powers 70,000 NY homes with clean energy

The robust 130-megawatt (MW) project has made history as the United States' inaugural utility-scale wind farm in federal waters.

The wind farm will produce energy to power 70,000 homes in New York. It will deliver clean energy directly to the electric grid in East Hampton via a single transmission line installed in March, according to the report by Electrek.

A significant leap forward in sustainable energy initiatives

For the next two decades, the energy generated will be sold to the Long Island Power Authority, an agreement lighting up the path to a sustainable future.

The project has been jointly developed by Danish energy company Ørsted and Boston-based Eversource. Ørsted announced the historical feat in a post on X.

The inaugural wind turbine at South Fork Wind is positioned some 35 nautical miles off Montauk. The project has just triumphantly wrapped up the installment of two turbines.

Anticipation hangs in the air as all 12 majestic SG 11-200 DD Siemens Gamesa turbines will be set up at their designated spots by early 2024.

The turbines were installed by Van Oord's offshore vessel, the Aeolus, as reported byInteresting Engineeringearlier. The first foundation was installed in June, and the first U.S.-built offshore substation was completed in July.

New York governor Kathy Hochul shared her excitement about the milestone achievement on X (formerly known as Twitter).

It’s a positively ⚡️ electric ⚡ day for New York’s clean energy transition — the first wind-powered energy has been delivered to Long Island customers!

This is a major milestone in our work to create good-paying union jobs & build a more sustainable future. https://t.co/S1nu8TmInw

"The generation of power from South Fork Wind is an incredible moment in the American clean energy story and for the Long Island communities that will benefit from this project for decades to come," said Stephanie McClellan, executive director at offshore wind nonprofit Turn Forward, in an interview with Electrek.

This initiative is poised to conquer up to six million tons of carbon emissions, which is equivalent to plucking 60,000 cars from the bustling highways each year.
