AI has been employed to predict homelessness in some areas as part of efforts to provide assistance to individuals at risk. AI algorithms can analyze data from various sources, such as social services, healthcare records, public housing data, unemployment data, and more to identify patterns and risk factors associated with homelessness.
As such, predictive AI models can help social service agencies and non-profit organizations identify individuals and families at risk of homelessness early in order to intervene and provide assistance before a crisis occurs.
In Los Angeles, a tool created by the University of California’s Los Angeles California Policy Lab (CPL) has been used for the last two years and has helped over 560 citizens avoid ending up on the streets.

This is according to a report by CBC Radiopublished on Thursday.
Targeted prevention
"I believe deeply that there's a need for targeted prevention programming," Dana Vanderford, the associate director of homelessness prevention with the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services, told the news outlet. "Without the ability to use AI, we don't have a good shot at targeting these resources to those who need them most."
The program Vanderford runs makes direct payments on behalf of people struggling in order to ensure they aren’t disqualified from other aid. Most of these amounts go toward essentials such as groceries and gas and help to keep people afloat as long as possible.
"When you're a person who is sort of barely holding on to the stability that you've achieved, one disruptive event … can topple everything over,” explained Vanderford.
Now, experts are evaluating the program to see if it actually works. The initial assessments have proved positive with studies reporting that most people identified by the AI received assistance that helped keep them off the streets.
Janey Rountree, executive director of the California Policy Lab that built the algorithm, told CBC Radio that AI could be effectively used to fix a wide variety of societal problems.
Improving aid
"Everything from what ads you see on your phone to what shows or movies streaming services suggest for you … [uses] predictive modelling. So it's very possible that the same technology could be used to improve health care delivery systems or identifying who needs certain preventative screenings," she said.
Indeed, AI can be used to inform the development of policies and strategies to prevent homelessness at a broader level, interfering even earlier so that homelessness never occurs. By identifying the root causes and risk factors of the issue, policymakers can work on long-term solutions such as finding gainful employment for people at risk as well as affordable housing.
However, it’s important to note that AI should only be seen as a tool to aid in homelessness prevention, it cannot replace the human element of support and assistance in addressing the complex social issue of homelessness. In the end, all AI can do is compliment the work of dedicated social workers and other support staff.
